HVAC piping sizes often are determined using rules-of-thumb and tradition for velocity and friction rates rather than objective analysis. This article provides information engineers can use on-the-job for pipe sizing and selecting the right pump. This article also gives information about a free spreadsheet available for sizing piping optimized to balance life-cycle energy and first costs. This tool automatically determines pipe sizes on a life-cycle cost basis, balancing first costs and future energy costs. At the same time the program accurately calculates pump head.
