Adsorption (also called solid sorption) refrigeration systems use solid sorption material such as silica gel and zeolite to produce cooling effect. The authors discuss their advantages and their disadvantages. These systems can be activated by low-grade thermal energy and use refrigerants having zero ozone depletion potential and low global warming potential. However, there are challenges that must be overcome before being considered as alternatives to the present vapor compression systems.
