Ground-Source Heat Pumps: Energy Efficiency for Two Canadian Schools
Ground-source heat pumps (GSHP) are an effi cient spaceconditioning technology that helps decrease electricity use and reduce peak demand. With school boards facing increasingly tight budgets, this technology offers an effective solution to reduce heating and cooling energy costs and enhance classroom comfort. It also ensures longer and safer service life for the equipment and improves the buildings general appearance. Two GSHP systems were implemented in two secondary schools in Qubec with, respectively, horizontal and vertical ground heat exchangers. The purpose was to demonstrate their energy performances in a cold climate to extend their application throughout the Canadian educational buildings.Citation: ASHRAE Journal, vol. 48, no. 5, May 2006
