This article discusses three strategies for safely reducing energy consumption of a laboratory exhaust system: passive variable volume exhaust, active VAV with anemometer, and active VAV with chemical monitor. They can be used for new laboratories or during the renovation of an existing laboratory. Two case studies are presented as well, one for a new building and one for existing buildings.
