What You Will Learn
Psychrometrics is a technical discipline that is at the heart of HVAC design. It is used to describe thermal comfort, size air handling units, and optimize energy performance. After completing the course, you should know how to:

- identify supply air, return air, coil air in terms of the psychrometric parameters
- describe the performance of cooling and heating coils
- determine the required capacity of heating and cooling coils to accommodate space temperature and humidity
- identify zones of a building based on psychrometric considerations
- evaluate cooling towers and humidification equipment
- evaluate heat recovery strategies

What You Will Learn
You will develop an understanding of the basic concepts of psychrometrics including moist air properties, evaporation and enthalpy, plus basic thermodynamic processes. After completing the course, you should know how to: use a psychrometric chart; properly design an HVAC system based on psychrometric principles; conduct a psychrometric analysis of HVAC components such as air handling units, heating and cooling coils, and humidifiers; evaluate the needs of individual spaces within a building; and determine energy reduction opportunities for HVAC systems.

An integral part of this course is the ASHRAE Psychrometric Analysis software, which is included on a free CD. The software allows students access to all of the ASHRAE psychrometric charts in both IP and SI units, right on their computer screen. Psychrometric process analysis can be performed throughout the course right on the ASHRAE Psychrometric charts.

Psychrometric software processes include air mixing, air collection, both sensible and total air cooling, air heating and humidifying, evaporative cooling and much more. The user has complete chart presentation control including custom altitudes or pressures, line on/off control, SHR lines, delta-h/delta-W lines, ASHRAE comfort zones, ASHRAE datacom zones and much more. The program outputs both a printed or PDF chart and a printed or PDF state point and process report, which details all the thermo-physical state point properties and process energy values.

Both charts and reports from the Psychrometric software are multi-lingual in both IP and SI units and can easily be copied onto the Windows clipboard for pasting into presentations, reports or any other Windows applications. The ASHRAE Psychrometric Analysis CD is perfect for working through the examples during the course, and will be an invaluable analysis tool long after the course.

Course Content:Thermodynamics of Open, Steady Process -- Basic thermodynamic processes for open systems; the Ideal Gas Law; conservation of mass and energy for steady, open processes; and the nature of enthalpy. The Theory of Moist Air -- The nature of air-water mixtures, indicators of moisture concentration in air, the adiabatic saturator, EMR and the humidification process, and measuring properties of moist air.Introducing the Psychrometric Chart -- Modern age of psychrometrics, creating the psychrometrics chart, and psychrometics software.Air Conditioning Processes on the Psychrometric Chart -- The power of the psychrometric chart, heating air, and cooling air with dehumidification.Psychrometric Analysis for HVAC Design -- Schematic of an air-conditioning system, mixing air streams, and designing with sensible heat ratio for heating and cooling.Psychrometric Analysis of HVAC Components -- The air handling unit, psychrometrics of heating coils, humidification equipment, temperature rise due to fans, and design using same CFM.The Psychrometrics of Zone Control -- Design zones psychrometrically, single zone systems to accomplish multiple zone control, and single air handler with interior terminal devices. The Psychrometics of Energy Conservation -- Heat recover devices, part load control, variable air volume, constant volume system with temperature reset and bypass dampers, and economizer cycle. The Designers Insight: Hard-to-Get-at Places -- Twists and turns, deep dehumidification: swimming pools, ice arenas, and cooling towers.
