A42 -- Supervisory Control Strategies and Optimization (I-P)
This chapter focuses on the opportunities and control strategies associated with using computerized control for centralized cooling and heating systems. The chapter is divided into three major sections: (1) background information on the effects of and opportunities for adjusting control variables, terminology, and descriptions of the systems and control variables considered in this chapter; (2) basic optimization methods used throughout in the application sections of the chapter (intended for researchers and developers of advanced control strategies); and (3) applications of both static and dynamic optimization methods (e.g., cooling plants with and without storage) as well as supervisory control strategies that can be implemented in computerized control systems, intended for practitioners.Chapter Table of ContentsTerminologyControl VariablesOPTIMIZATION METHODSStatic OptimizationDynamic OptimizationApplications of Static OptimizationApplications of Dynamic OptimizationSUPERVISORY CONTROL STRATEGIES AND TOOLSCooling Tower Fan ControlChilled-Water Reset with Fixed-Speed PumpingChilled-Water Reset with Variable-Speed PumpingSequencing and Loading Multiple ChillersStrategies for BoilersStrategies for Air-Handling UnitsStrategies for Building Zone Temperature Set PointsControl of Discrete Cool Thermal StorageForecasting Diurnal Demand ProfilesPredictive Control StrategiesCitation: 2011 ASHRAE Handbook -- HVAC Applications: Chapter 42, Supervisory Control Strategies and Optimization
