Describes the state of the art Olympic venue produced by the design team of the Bobsled and Luge Track for the Utah Winter Sports Park, in partnership with relevant organizations. States the refrigerated, 1600m (5,250 ft) combination bobsled/luge track is unlike any other track in the world. The track is a series of evaporators embedded in a reinforced concrete structure. The sliding surface is formed by bringing the concrete surfaced to 12degF (-11degC) and manually spraying water on the concrete to form around 2 in (50 mm) of ice. Describes the refrigeration plant, its design, layout and operation. Notes energy conservation considerations. Concludes that this award-winning project demonstrates that the innovative application of sound refrigeration design practices can be applied to non-standard designs with unusual and demanding constraints.
